Southbound 309 Expressway Reduced to One Lane at Northern End
Restriction starts Monday and lasts until 2010
09/21/2007 - Fort Washington, PA.
The southbound Route 309 Expressway will be restricted to a single lane from the on-ramp at Bethlehem Pike to the Norristown Road/Springhouse Interchange in Lower Gwynedd Township, Montgomery County, beginning Monday (Sept. 24) for roadway and bridge construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today. The southbound single-lane pattern will remain in effect until 2010.
PennDOT advised motorists traveling south on Route 309 en route to the expressway entrance to allow additional travel time or use an alternate route because backups will occur when the single-lane pattern is in effect.
Southbound Route 309 is being reduced to one lane in order to rebuild the bridge over Bethlehem Pike and to reconstruct the northern portion of the expressway.
Also next week (Sept. 24-28), crews will restrict southbound Route 309 from two lanes to one between Norristown Road and Highland Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. as the contractor prepare to shift traffic and reconstruct the median. Crews are scheduled to remove and repaint pavement markings and shift southbound traffic to the right side of the highway. Then crews will place construction barriers along the edge of the southbound left lane to create a protected work zone in the center of the expressway.
Starting on October 3, a section of northbound Route 309 between Highland Avenue and the expressway’s northern terminus at Bethlehem Pike will be reduced to one lane around-the-clock for about three weeks for the removal of the existing median and the reconstruction of the center section of the expressway. PennDOT will rebuild the median so northbound travel lanes can be shifted to the center of the highway and crews can then begin rebuilding the northbound side of Route 309 between Highland Avenue and Bethlehem Pike later this fall.
On Tuesday (Sept. 25), the Cedar Hill Road Bridge over Route 309 will be closed and detoured until 2010 for the construction of a new bridge. Through traffic will be detoured over Bethlehem Pike, Lower State Road and Route 63.
These operations are part of PennDOT’s $350 million project to rebuild the Route 309 Expressway and its interchanges between Cheltenham Avenue in Philadelphia and Route 63 (Welsh Road) in Lower Gwynedd Township. The reconstruction of the northern section of the expressway between Highland Avenue and Route 63 is being performed by the joint venture of Nyleve Bridge Corporation of Emmaus, Pa. and James D. Morrissey, Inc. of Philadelphia under a $102,480,804 contract.
