Route 309 Construction Update: September 2010
Center area reconstruction north of expressway; Norristown Road construction progressing

As construction continues in the center section of Route 309/Bethlehem Pike north of the Route 309 Expressway, crews are completing a number of tasks across the project area in advance of final paving on the expressway between Bethlehem Pike and Highland Avenue.

Crews are excavating and rebuilding the center section of pavement between Route 63 (Welsh Road) and the expressway ramps. Widening has been completed on the southbound side, and the northbound lanes were repaired in 2009. The entire at-grade section of Route 309/Bethlehem Pike from the expressway through the intersection with Route 63 (Welsh Road) will be paved with a final wearing course this fall. Welsh Road also will be resurfaced approaching the intersection with Route 309 at that time.

On the expressway, crews are wrapping up work on center area reconstruction and placing asphalt in areas to level out the base pavement in advance of final paving of the wearing course between Highland Avenue and the end of the expressway to the north.

Crews also are making final improvements to the ramps at Susquehanna Road and Butler Pike, dressing the expressway’s embankments and completing numerous tasks along the 3-plus miles of rebuilt expressway’s northern section.

Construction also is nearing completion on Norristown Road, where crews are rebuilding the eastbound side, along with the existing ramps on that side of the road.  Work also is nearing an end on the two new ramps – a southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramp –  that have been built on the opposite side at that interchange. The new ramps will open after the final paving is completed.  The half-mile stretch of Norristown Road approaching Route 309 has been lowered to increase vertical clearance beneath the expressway.

Work has been completed on the middle section of the mainline bridges over Norristown Road and Susquehanna Road, which were rebuilt, and on the center sections of bridge decks at McKean Road, Tennis Avenue, Butler Pike and Loch Alsh Avenue, which have been refurbished.  The new bridge over Bethlehem Pike also has been completed.

Reconstruction of the northern section of the Route 309 Expressway and on a section of Route 309/Bethlehem Pike from the end of the expressway to north of Route 63 (Welsh Road) is expected to be completed this fall.

 NORTHERN SECTION RAMP STATUS

Installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) components – cameras, sensors, electronic signs – also continues along the entire expressway and along Route 309 north of the expressway through Montgomeryville. Daytime lane restrictions may be in place in the rebuilt section of Route 309 between Cheltenham Avenue and Highland Avenue to allow crews to install various components.

South of Highland Avenue
The Route 309 Expressway has been widened and rebuilt from Highland Avenue through the Easton Road Interchange. The at-grade segment of Route 309/Ogontz Avenue between the interchange and Cheltenham Avenue also has been improved and rebuilt, all under earlier stages of the $360 million project.
